Thombattu falls

We had travelled to Hosangadi near Kundapura searching for Kunchikal falls, supposed to be the highest waterfall in India. It was an investigation cum exploration, and we were not surprised when we failed to achieve our goal. There were many hurdles to cross – permission from multiple departments, non-existent trails and dense forests. We found that it was not impossible to reach the waterfall, but not on that day. So, I opened the backup plan and started with the first one – Thombattu falls.

Reaching Thombattu falls was simple. Google Maps accurately led us to the waterfall. The last stretch of a km was on the mud road, and I was hesitant to drive my car on that stretch. To our luck, one person was coming from the waterfall side. He told me that I could take my car without any issue. The road through the forest was rough, but it was manageable. It may be difficult in the rainy season as there are a couple of slushy areas to cross.

The waterfall was next to the road. It was a small but multi-step waterfall. Looking at the crowd, I felt that it was a popular place with locals. Forest guards deployed in the area ensured that the tourists behaved properly. Their presence ruled out activities like swimming, partying and alcohol consumption. The outcome was that the place was relatively clean.

We crossed the stream to get a better view of the waterfall. There was another small waterfall downstream. At its base was a small pool.

Overall, it is a nice place to visit. From the amount of water, it looked like a seasonal waterfall. Monsoon would be the best time to see this place. The waterfall is located in Udupi district, and it is 5 km from Hosangadi. You need to cross a check post at Hosangandi. But the guards would let you in if you are travelling to Thombattu.
