If you are travelling from Trichy to Karaikudi (Pudukkottai-Karaikudi Highway), it is hard to miss the fort that makes its appearance in the town of Thirumayam. It is a small but impressive fort which can be visited if you driving on the highway or visiting Chettinad area.

The fort was constructed in 1687 by a local chieftain. It is now renovated and maintained by ASI. A small garden is maintained at the entrance of the fort. ASI charges a small entrance fee for the fort.

It is a very short walk in the fort. One can easy reach the top of the fort within 10 – 15 minutes. The rock cut steps can pose challenges for elderly people. An interesting point on the way to the top is a huge rock precariously placed.

On top of the fort is a bastion with a cannon mounted on top of it. It is a British construction. A nice view of the surrounding area can be seen from the top of the bastion.

There are few rock cut temples in the fort. There is also a rock cut cell with Shiva linga.

It would not take more than an hour to visit the fort. A nice short detour for people driving on the highway.
