If you are travelling from Trichy to Karaikudi (Pudukkottai-Karaikudi Highway), it is hard to miss the fort that makes its appearance in the town of Thirumayam. It is a small but impressive fort. It is a nice place to tour if you are visiting the Chettinad area.

The fort was constructed in 1687 by a local chieftain, which is now renovated and maintained by ASI. You can see a small garden at the entrance of the fort. ASI charges a small entrance fee.

It is a short walk inside the fort. One can easily reach the top of the fort within 10 – 15 minutes. The rock-cut steps can pose challenges for elderly people. An interesting point on the way to the top is a big rock precariously placed.

On top of the fort is a bastion with a cannon mounted on top of it. It is a British construction. The bastion provides a nice view of the surrounding areas.

There are few rock-cut temples in the fort. There is also a rock-cut cell with Shiva linga.

It would not take more than an hour to visit the fort. It is a short detour for people driving on the highway.
