Vantawng and Tuirihiau waterfalls, Mizoram

posted in: Asia, India, Mizoram, Waterfalls | 4

Vantawng and Tuirihiau are the two most famous waterfalls in Mizoram. While Vantawng, at 750 feet in height, is known as the highest waterfall in Mizoram, Tuirihiau is unique as people can go “behind” the waterfall!!

Travel to thenzawl

We started our journey from Aizawl. The roads were in good condition, and the drive was peaceful. We enjoyed the beautiful scenery throughout the journey. We crossed Hmuifang, a hill station, but did not stop as we had a dedicated day reserved to enjoy its beauty during our return journey.

The “tropic of cancer” point was a good break, and we took some snaps.

After about 3 hours of journey, we reached the small town of Thenzawl. We had our lunch at a roadside restaurant before heading to the waterfall.

Vantawng waterfall

Our first visit was to Vantawng waterfall. From the main road, we had to travel for 4-5 km on a narrow concrete road. It was a challenging stretch as one vehicle had to go down when another came in the opposite direction. We had one such encounter, and the tyre of our car went down the edge of the concrete road. Our driver had to use all his skills to bring it back on the road. The situation is similar in many places with concrete roads. Why do the local contractors and concerned Government people are so incompetent?

We reached the end of the road with a small parking lot and a viewpoint. The huge Vantawng waterfall was in front of us!! It was a great scene to see the waterfall in the midst of the dense forest.

We spent a long time viewing the falls. There were no other people during our visit!! Imagine such a place in Karnataka. It would have been brimming with people!!

Tuirihiau waterfall

We drove back to the main road and reached Tuirihiau (hard to pronounce) park. We paid entry fees and walked down the steps to reach the waterfall. Within 10 minutes, we were in front of it.

Unlike Vantawng, Tuirihiau was a small waterfall, but it had its charm. We were stunned when we went inside the waterfall. It was an experience that we never had earlier. It is hard to write in words, and one has to be there to feel it.

With complete satisfaction, we came out of the waterfall. We spent the rest of the evening at Dilpui amusement park in Thenzawl. Later, we went to the tourist lodge for our stay.

Information and tips
  • Both waterfalls are within 10 km of Thenzawl.
  • While it is possible to do it as a day trip from Aizawl, I recommend staying at Thenzawl. The evenings are peaceful in that little town.
  • There are a few roadside restaurants in Thenzawl. The tourist lodge provides breakfast and dinner but not lunch.
  • We stayed at the tourist lodge, which was value for money. Online booking is possible from their website. Staying at the golf course can be another option, but it is expensive.

Tam Dil lake is a nice place. But it may be challenging to visit now as India as suspended free border movement with Myanmar.
