Reiek is a hill station near Aizawl. Being close to the capital city, it attracts a lot of locals. Its attraction is justified considering its offerings – waterfalls, adventure sports, viewpoints, trekking and heritage village.

Travel to Reiek

We decided to visit Reiek on a day trip from Aizawl. It was just 30 km from Aizawl, but it took nearly two hours to cover this distance. We were not in a hurry, and many places on the way justified stops. It was the end of the wet season, and many waterfalls filled the views on the roadside.

The road though narrow was in a good state. It was a welcome relief from the treacherous road we experienced towards Champhai. Reiek village looked beautiful. The chaos in Aizawl was absent, and the serene feeling was present.

Hike to Reiek Peak

We went to the Reiek tourist resort, maintained by Mizoram tourism, paid the entry fee and went inside. The destination was to hike to Reiek peak, the prime attraction in the area. Our driver also decided to walk with us.

A group of college kids were also hiking that day. It made the trail lively. They quickly overtook us, but we could hear their chatter throughout the trek!! The hiking path was wide and continuously went up. Even though we were walking in the dense forest, the humidity made us sweat profusely.

After some time, we reached a big cave. It was a suitable place to rest and proceed further. Shortly, we crossed the forest and entered the grassland. I had imagined the trek would end at that place, but instead, we saw the steep path towards the hill!!

The stretch on the grassland was challenging due to the humidity. But the views all along made the climb much more manageable. By the time we reached the top, the kids had arrived and were busy taking photographs and resting.

We spent some time sitting under the shade of a tree and savouring the views. The rising mist indicated the end of clear weather on that day. Very soon, it covered the hills. While it blocked the sceneries we were enjoying, it made the return journey easier. We felt the return journey was long as we were short on water. We had underestimated the level of humidity.

Model heritage village

Once we reached the resort, our driver took us to the model heritage village. It depicted the life of a typical Mizo village in those old days. It gave us some view of their lifestyle and culture.

We had our late lunch at a restaurant in the village, visited some viewpoints and then proceeded towards Aizawl. It was a great day on our Mizoram trip!!
