Channagiri fort, Shivamogga

Whenever I went through the town of Channagiri, the fort on top of the hill always caught my attention. I always wanted to visit it, but each time there was a reason to skip it.

This time, on our way to our hometown, we planned our trip so that we could visit this fort without any excuses.

As we approached the fort from the main road, we had to take a detour and drive on a narrow road before reaching the entrance. There was hardly any space to park my car, so we stopped before the entrance and parked on the roadside.

About Channagiri fort

The first impression of the fort was positive. It seemed well-maintained. The information board mentioned,

This place was in the possession of the Gangas under Asandinadu, then it became part of Nolambavadi 32000. During the rule of Chalukyas of Kalyana, subsequently ruled by Pandyas Uchchangi, later this place passed on into the hands of Keladi rulers in the 17th century. The place was named Channagiri after Chennammaji, who built a fort here. The fort is located to the west of the present Channagiri town. The layout comprises two masonry walls set in mud mortar, defended by moats, and the main gate towards the north. Roughly ovalish, the fort wall is punctuated with as many as 7 bastions and two circular watchtowers. There is a depression at the top for the collection of rainwater, towards the northeast is a rock and pond with stone-cut steps. At the top, several basements of the secular structures. There is a temple having the image of Vishnu as Bete Ranganath Swamy.

We explored the fort. It was afternoon, but the weather was pleasant due to the overcast sky. Many people had come to enjoy the place, while a few were looking for a peaceful location to spend some private time.

There are two towers in the fort. One is located on the edge, offering a nice view of the town and its surroundings.

Another tower is near the Sri Ranganatha temple, which is also the highest point in the fort. Most visitors come to see the temple. It is a small temple located in a peaceful spot. The tower next to the temple offers a nice view.

We spent about an hour at the fort. After seeing the ruined “Sira Fort” earlier in the day, it was refreshing to see the decently maintained fort in Channagiri.
