Aizawl is the capital city of Mizoram and is the entry point of the state for most travellers. Before exploring the state, it is a good idea to spend a day in Aizawl and visit a few spots.
We spent an entire day in Aizawl during our recent trip to Mizoram. We also stayed a few nights in Aizawl as it was the base for visiting nearby areas.
Here is the list of places we visited in Aizawl.
Sunset place
We arrived on a flight to Aizawl in the afternoon and checked into the hotel. With an hour to spare before sunset, we went for a walk. Inadvertently, we reached a bridge with some beautiful views. The evening provided a vivid picture of the sky and the clouds. We were mesmerised and decided to come and watch on other days during our stay in Aizawl. Little we knew that it would be only clear evening. On all other days, it was either misty or rainy in the evening!!
Lalsavunga Park at Hlimen
Our second day in Mizoram started with rain. It was also a Sunday, the day when most places are closed. It was a shaky start for our trip. Dawnga, our car owner, had told us that he would arrive by 10 AM. He was in front of our hotel before that time. It was one thing I observed in Mizoram; people generally honoured their commitment on time.
The first place of our day was Lalsavunga Park at Hlimen. Located on the southern end of Aizawl, it is a park with some great views. The drive was fast, thanks to the empty roads. The last stretch was on a narrow road. It had stopped raining when we reached the park entrance, but the area was misty. We paid entrance fees and entered the park.
We reached a large area which had a viewpoint. As the mist lifted for some time, the view of the surroundings came into the picture. It gave a new perspective on the place. There were multiple viewpoints, and we hiked to see the vistas.
At the other end, we saw a “hanging bridge” on top of a hill. Dawnga mentioned that we reach that place by car.
From the parking place, it was a nice hike to that place. The two back-to-back “hanging bridge” gave a new perspective of the place!
While coming back, we saw a few roadside shops opening. I wondered how they make business, as there were no other visitors apart from us. Dawnga mentioned that the people come during the afternoon.
Aizawl views
Aizawl is a town on the hills. As expected, there are many viewpoints in the town. We went to one such point on the western side of Aizawl that provided a view of part of the town.
We then went to the northern part to get the “top view” of the city. It was misty on top of the hill, but we saw some views.
KV Paradise
A “mini Taj Mahal” was built by a prominent person in Aizawl in memory of his wife.
Durtlang hills
We spent some time in the north of Aizawl looking at the beautiful Durtlang hills.
Solomon’s temple
It is a recently built church with admirable architecture. The twelve main doors open to a large hall. It was a calm and serene place to spend some time.
Mizoram state museum
We could not visit on our first day in Aizawl as it was closed on Sunday. On one of the other days, we managed to visit this place. A good place to understand the history of the state and its population. Opening time: 10 AM to 3 PM.
Information and tips
- One day is sufficient to visit most of the places in Aizawl.
- We could not find a single restaurant that opened on Sunday. We were prepared for it and had packed some stuff. There were some roadside stalls selling local food.
- There are many hotels and homestays in Aizawl for the stay.
