I had heard about the two reservoirs in the village of Kitwad near Belagavi. The water released from these dams formed waterfalls downstream. When I was in Belagavi recently, I included Kitwad in my itinerary.
The village was about 4 km from the main road. Once we entered the village road, its condition suddenly deteriorated after a km. I was contemplating my next course of action, and we saw another vehicle crossing this section and going smoothly later. So, it was only a short stretch that was bad. A villager passing by also confirmed it.
The first waterfall
The next three km was a smooth drive, but the road narrowed as we entered the village. Villagers suggested we drive further, and we followed their words. The last house marked the end of that village. We parked our car and started walking on the tank bund.
It was a cloudy but pleasant day. The dam and its surroundings looked beautiful. We reached the other side of the dam and heard the sound of the flowing water. The sound increased as we proceeded further. Shortly, we crossed the water outlet and walked further down to the waterfall.
It was a beautiful scene to watch. We were almost at the same level as the waterfall, with a great front view. There was a path to go down, but it was challenging due to the water level. We enjoyed the view from the front.
Second waterfall
After going back to the village, we enquired about the second waterfall. The villagers did not encourage us to visit the waterfall as the water level was low. Since we had come so near, we decided to have a look at it.
We proceeded in the direction given by villagers and reached the other dam. Unlike the first dam, we could drive on this reservoir. We decided to park our car on the other side of the dam and continued walking the remaining distance.
It was another pleasant walk. We reached the outlet of the dam and continued downstream. Very soon, we were at the waterfall.
Each waterfall is different, and this one was no exception. Though it was a small waterfall, its surroundings gave a unique aura to this place. We decided to sit and relax in that beautiful place for a long time.
Information and tips
- It is a monsoon waterfall, and water flows only if the dam is full.
- While Google Maps location is accurate, it was direct properly. The best way is to reach Kitwad village and then get local support. There are no signboards indicating the presence of these waterfalls.
- Kitwad village is about 20 km from Belagavi.
- One must exercise extreme caution near the water bodies, and the waterfalls of Kitwad are no exception to this rule. On 26th November 2022, in a tragic incident, four girls died while taking selfies in this waterfall. Nothing is more important than life.
