Waterfalls are common in Western ghats. During monsoon, they appear everywhere, providing a visual treat to the people. Many such waterfalls are next to the road, making it easy for people to saviour the beauty of these waterfalls. The waterfalls like Baalebare, Chennekkal, Channemane, Vajra are some of the roadside falls. The rainy season is the best time to visit these falls.
Recently, we visited such roadside waterfalls near Jayapura in Sringeri taluk. It was part of our monsoon trip to the Malenaadu area.
Theerthakere waterfalls
Theerthakere waterfalls is about five km from Jayapura on Jayapura-Basarikatte road. This beautiful waterfall makes a sudden appearance after a turn. It is a two-step waterfall, its height maybe around 100 feet.
We observed that almost everyone stopped their vehicles to spend some time in the waterfall, resulting in continuous inflow and outflow of people. Taking selfies with the waterfall seemed to be popular among the visitors, followed by portrait photography. Sankara and I belonged to rare minority species among homo sapiens who did not bother much about selfies or self-portraits!!
The water joins the Seeta river, which flows next to the road, a tributary to the Tunga river. Do not confuse this with the Seetha River in the Udupi district.
Abbikallu waterfalls
Six km further on the main road is Abbikallu falls. Though this waterfall is next to the road, it is not easily visible. Also, the short height of this waterfall makes it less obvious to the people travelling on the road.
Due to recent rains, there was a copious amount of water in the waterfalls. The muddy water and its force gave us a different experience.
