Most of us know about the flag retreat ceremony that happens every evening at Attari Wagah border. A similar but lesser known event happens at India Bangladesh border near Agartala. I have not yet visited Attari Wagah border but recently witnessed the ceremony at Agartala.
Reaching the border
Our flight from Imphal landed in Agartala at around 2:15 PM. We quickly, reached our hotel, checked-in and left for the border. We knew that the ceremony happens before sunset and in December, the sun sets in that eastern state at around 4:30 PM. So, we had very little time.
The border was about 6 km from the center of Agartala and we took an auto to reach the place. Asking the auto driver to wait till we come back, we headed towards the gate. The security personnel checked our ids and let us in. The preparations for the ceremony was just starting and few people had already arrived.
The ceremony
The ceremony happened on the road itself and people on either side of the border were sitting or standing on the road. The event stared by blowing the trumpet. It was followed by a parade, untying the rope, flag lowering and taking it back with the parade. The event was associated with a high pitch voice by BSF and Bangladesh counterpart.
Unlike Attari Wagah, the border with Bangladesh is peaceful and atmosphere friendly. Post ceremony, we were allowed to interact with BSF, Bangladesh soldiers and its citizens. Of course, we were not allowed to cross the “gate” the leads to the neighboring country. Chaya, for some reason seemed excited to shake hands with Bangladesh kids!!
Since Bangladesh requires visa, it is not possible to enter into other side. Unlike Myanmar, there is no option for “day trip” into Bangladesh. As relations with Bangladesh is improving in recent years, the entry hassles may be simplified.
If you visit Agartala, do experience this ceremony.
